Overview
If you're experiencing an issue where every other print is successful using an Epson 1400, 1430, or 1500 printer, this typically points to a partially clogged print head. Understanding how these printers operate and how to properly maintain them can quickly resolve this problem and get you back to consistent, high-quality film output.
Understanding the Split Head System
Epson 1400, 1430, and 1500 printers use what’s known as a "Split Head" system when printing film positives. This means the printer utilizes three active print heads at a time, alternating between two sets for each print job. If one of the print heads is partially clogged, you’ll notice inconsistent results often described as every other print looking correct while the next is faint, banded, or incomplete.
To ensure AccuRIP® functions correctly and your films print at the highest quality, the printer must be in optimal working condition. That starts with checking ink levels and performing nozzle checks.
Step-by-Step: Fixing the Issue
-
Check Ink Levels
Make sure your printer has an ample supply of ink. If you’re using Freehand’s Dmax® All Black Ink System, ensure each cartridge is at least one-third full. Low ink can prevent successful cleanings and disrupt ink flow. -
Run a Nozzle Check
Use your Epson utility software to print a Nozzle Check.- On Windows: Open the Devices and Printers menu > Right-click your Epson printer > Select "Printing Preferences" > Click the "Maintenance" tab > Choose "Nozzle Check."
- On macOS: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Select your Epson printer > Click "Options & Supplies" > "Utility" > "Open Printer Utility" > Select "Nozzle Check."
-
Interpret the Nozzle Pattern
- If there are broken lines or blank areas, a head cleaning is needed.
- If the pattern is clean (no gaps or missing lines), your printhead is functioning properly.
-
Perform Head Cleanings (If Needed)
Use the Epson utility to run a head cleaning. After each cleaning:- Wait a few minutes before running another Nozzle Check.
- Do not run more than 3 cleanings in a row to avoid ink waste.
- After running a few cleanings if still unable to print solid nozzle check, clean the printhead using Amaze-INK.
-
Confirm with a Clean Nozzle Check
Once you achieve a clean Nozzle Check print you can resume printing from AccuRIP Emerald without issues.
