How to Set and Preview Base Separation Choke in Separation Studio® NXT

When creating a Base separation for a vector PDF in Separation Studio NXT, a Choke value can be set to determine how much the base is choked in from the colors on top. Here we’ll show you a quick and easy way to preview the base separation allowing you to make any adjustments as needed.

What is a Base Choke?

A choke for a base separation refers to slightly reducing the edge of the base area compared to the design it supports. A choke prevents the base from showing around the edges of colored ink due to misalignment during printing. By choking the edge of the base separation, it reduces the risk of it peeking out and ensures a cleaner, more precise print. The main reason behind choking of a base separation is due to screen and press mis-registration issues.

When creating a base for a vector PDF, the Choke value is applied to each separation, helping control how colors interact with the base for both creative and standard applications.

The software sets this value to 0.05 pts by default. "Apply to All" sets the same value for all selected separations, while toggling it OFF (Red) allows custom values for each color.

Previewing the Base with Base Jumping

Base Jumping is moving the base to the end of the separations, making it visible “on top” instead of hidden beneath colors. Click and drag the base to the far right of all separations. This quick and easy trick allows the user to check values set for the choke to determine if it suits the needs of the print, if not make adjustments.

In the Base Jump example below, an exaggerated 1pt choke is applied to all separations, followed by moving the base to the end of the line. This ensures the base is choked enough to allow the separations to print cleanly.
