Black is not a natural RGB spectral color value, therefore this requires GENERATING a Black separation. It is produced using the RGB sim process software engine Spot Process®. Upon opening a file the software analyzes RGB color values properly making separations for printing on a black garment. If needing to print an image on a colored garment other than black, it will be necessary to generate a black separation. Here are steps to Generate the Black separation:
STEPS:
- After opening a JPEG/TIFF/PNG that produces Spot Process® color separations, click the BLACK GENERATION button.
- Pick Skeletal/Detailed or Sharper for the separation.
- Skeletal produces a minimal separation used for dark surface printing (navy, brown)
- Detailed produces a separation with more mid-range data than the Skeletal black. Used when printing on medium-range colored surfaces (royal, gray).
- Sharper produces a separation with the most surface area detail. Used on lighter surface areas (white, tan).
- The next window will require a file to be selected, this will be the same file currently open in the software. In doing so, a black separation will be generated and properly placed into the print order just after the base separation.
TIP: It is advised to print black early on press allowing it to properly affect the other color separations without dominating the print result. This is not a “trap screen” used with hard-edge graphics like cartoons. This is an important separation to create proper tonality on press when printing halftones wet on wet. Black is an aggressive ink, properly print it early in the print rotation.
